Development of an operational method for planning Nature-based Solutions to reduce coastal risks
-
New Caledonia has submitted a proposal for action under the GO Facility, led by the Direction de l'Industrie, des Mines et de l'Énergie (DIMENC) - Observatoire du Littoral de Nouvelle-Calédonie (OBLIC).
-
This action is part of the resilience and vulnerability reduction component of New Caledonia's Public Risk Management Policy (PPGR). The general objective of this mission is to analyze the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) as a means of combating coastal risks in New Caledonia, particularly risks linked to climate change, and to provide a decision-making tool to local coastal management authorities on the choice of the nature of NBS to deploy according to coastal segments.
-
The implementation of this facility is entrusted to the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM), in partnership with the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement(IRD), responsible for carrying out the following activities:
- Capitalize existing information on coastal hazards and their management in New Caledonia,
- Determine significant hazard and risk areas on a New Caledonian scale in collaboration with OBLIC,
- Production of a typology of sites,
- Analysis of the perception and acceptability of SfN by the various Caledonian stakeholders, carried out by a researcher in ethnoecology,
- Identification of applicable SfNs according to each type of site,
- Select one or more pilot sites,
- Identify missing data on pilot sites and capture data,
- Synthesis of results and final report.
The results will contribute to the development of an operational method to guide coastal risk management planning and decision-making in New Caledonia, highlighting the use of Nature-based Solutions as an alternative to traditional coastal protection approaches.
