•           This GO facility deployed in Bermuda aims to support the modernization of Building Codes to incorporate the challenges implied by climate change: the main objective is to work towards more resilient construction in the face of harsh climatic conditions, and to optimize the energy performance of future buildings.

  •           The facility is based on the adoption of a new Code for the construction of buildings adapted to extreme weather phenomena such as hurricanes, floods or storms, which are becoming increasingly frequent with climate change. Similarly, improved energy performance should help reduce electricity consumption in new buildings, which will have to meet mandatory minimum safety and energy consumption standards.

  •           The standards will be established after a multi-stage process: first, the experiences of other countries/territories will be analyzed to understand what minimum standards need to be incorporated, while taking into account the specific needs of the territory. Next, we need to analyze the economic impact of such a change, and raise awareness among industry professionals and the public to support the implementation of the building code, which is the ultimate objective of this facility. Once updated, this code should apply to all new buildings and major renovations, ensuring lasting effects on the region's ecological resilience and energy consumption. The knowledge and best practices resulting from this initiative could be disseminated to other island territories sharing similar challenges, notably within the framework of the GO Communities.
