Strengthening food security on Ascension Island
-
Context
Ascension relies heavily on food imports, exposing the territory to logistical disruptions, international price fluctuations and external crises. Geographical isolation reinforces the territory's vulnerability to external shocks.
-
Stakes and objectives
Identify suitable solutions to develop viable local production, compatible with climate and environmental constraints, and gradually reduce external dependence.
-
Stakeholders
Ascension Island Government, technical services, local stakeholders.
Facility description
The Facility makes it possible to analyze the territory's food needs and evaluate the production techniques best suited to local conditions, including greenhouse crops, hydroponic systems or other innovative solutions.
Water, soil and climate constraints are taken into account to propose realistic local production scenarios. This approach aims to reinforce food self-sufficiency, improve security of supply and increase the territory's resilience to crises.
Expected deliverables
- Detailed diagnosis of food needs
- Feasibility study of suitable production techniques
- Local production scenarios and estimation of potential volumes
- Investment and implementation recommendations
- Progressive action plan for agricultural development
