Support for the development of a climate change adaptation strategy
-
In November 2023, the Greenlandic Parliament voted in favor of the territory's accession to the Paris Agreement (which constitutes the first global framework for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, ratified by 196 states, and the EU, aiming to limit the rise in temperatures to a maximum of 2°C), an accession that was formalized during the COP28 held in Dubai.
-
By joining the framework of this agreement, Greenland commits to reducing its emissions, and to developing a national strategy better adapted to the current climate context, an important decision for this territory, which is directly affected by climate change and the accelerated melting of its ice cap, which impacts sea levels worldwide, making Greenland a global barometer of climate change, and an illustration of the interdependence of ecosystems. The GO Facility aims to produce analyses and provide technical and legal advice to the Greenland government to support it in developing a national climate strategy and delivering on its commitments to the Paris Agreement.
-
The aim is therefore to analyze the legal and technical requirements imposed by the Agreement, to assess the potential for reducing GHG emissions by sector (the most difficult to decarbonize being electricity, transport, fishing and mining), and to promote Greenland's access to international climate financing, all with a view to defining a suitable roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
This facility therefore intends to work towards structuring Greenland's commitment to the fight against climate change, by laying the foundations for an ambitious national climate policy that guarantees access to viable financial resources and a sustainable economic transition.
