Resilience to climate change
-
-
Climate resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for and respond to hazardous climatic events. As the impacts of climate change become increasingly evident on a global scale, European and British Overseas Countries and Territories find themselves particularly vulnerable to climate disruption, including coastal erosion, flooding, drought and heatwaves. Climate resilience is about assessing the current and future risks posed by these changes, and taking steps to proactively address them.
-
The GO (Green Overseas) program supports the OCTs in this crucial process, focusing on solutions adapted to local contexts. Among the challenges facing these territories are the need to protect water resources, ensure food security, and limit the risks of coastal erosion and marine submersion. These challenges call for specific adaptation strategies, such as the implementation of resilient infrastructures and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, taking into account local social and economic realities.
-
The lack of fine-grained data on climate risks at a relevant scale often hinders the implementation of effective adaptation strategies. The GO program works to fill these gaps by supporting data collection, awareness-raising and strategic planning projects to strengthen local resilience.
Climate resilience also involves the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems, essential for maintaining ecological balance and providing vital environmental services. The actions supported by the GO program not only strengthen ecosystem resilience, but also create economic opportunities for the inhabitants of the OCTs, while seeking to reduce social inequalities and promote green growth. The success of this resilient transition relies on a participatory approach. By working with local communities, public authorities and businesses, the GO program enables OCTs to implement adapted and sustainable solutions. In addition, innovative financing mechanisms, such as payments for environmental services, ensure the sustainability of the actions undertaken, guaranteeing that climate resilience becomes a genuine development opportunity for future generations.
