Climate-resilient solid waste management in the British Virgin Islands
-
Context
Climate change is already disrupting solid waste management operations and infrastructure in the BVI. Rising temperatures, more intense rainfall and hurricanes are affecting waste collection, treatment and disposal, causing landfill fires, landslides and service interruptions among other things. Although climate resilience is a national priority, the waste sector faces aging infrastructure, limited technical and financial capacity, and a heightened need for public awareness.
-
Stakes and objectives
The GO Facility aims to assess the impacts and vulnerabilities of climate change on the solid waste sector, build institutional and operational capacity in waste management and disaster preparedness, and support the development of policies and regulations that promote more resilient infrastructure and operations.
-
Facility description
The action includes (1) a climate risk assessment for the Solid Waste Management Sector infrastructures and operations and to identification of corresponding risk mitigation measures; (2) the definition of proposed amendments or supplementary pieces of legislation to incorporate climate resilience for the solid waste management sector in legislation; and (3) capacity building activities to enhance resilience to climate change in planning, management and operations for the Solid Waste Management Sector.
