Operational method for deploying Nature-based Solutions against coastal hazards
-
Context
The effects of climate change represent major coastal risks for New Caledonia, including coastal erosion, marine submersion and the degradation of coastal ecosystems. Against this backdrop, New Caledonia has embarked on a Public Risk Management Policy aimed at strengthening the territory's resilience. The implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) appears to be a relevant approach to meet these challenges. This facility also works in synergy with other projects, notably the PEBACC++ program, to reinforce the impact of the actions undertaken.
-
Stakes & objectives
The facility aims to develop an operational decision-support method to guide strategic choices in SfN. The aim is to identify, evaluate and implement solutions adapted to the specific features of the New Caledonian coastline. Expected results include identification of the most vulnerable coastal zones, assessment of the social acceptability of solutions and selection of SfN adapted to each site.

Stakeholders involved
New Caledonia submitted an action proposal under the GO Facility, led by the Direction de l'Industrie, des Mines et de l'Énergie (DIMENC) - Observatoire du Littoral de Nouvelle-Calédonie (OBLIC).
Collaboration with scientific institutions, local authorities and population representatives.
Synergy with other projects such as the PEBACC++ program.Facility description
The facility involves developing a comprehensive methodology for SfN planning and decision support. It provides for the identification of coastal areas vulnerable to erosion and marine submersion, as well as the creation of a typology of sites according to their environmental and socio-economic characteristics. The approach includes assessing the social acceptability of SfN and selecting the most appropriate solutions for each type of site. Experiments are planned on potential pilot sites. The whole process is conducted in collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure an integrated and sustainable approach.
