Proposal to deliver an effective step change in the generation and storage of power
-
This GO facility aims to support the Government of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) in its energy transition towards a net zero emissions target by 2040. The aim of the project is to explore alternative solutions for power generation from renewable energies, in particular solar and wind power, in an extreme sub-Antarctic environment.
-
The project focuses on assessing the technical feasibility, environmental impacts and financial implications of increased deployment of solar power and battery storage at South Georgia's two main settlement sites: King Edward Point/Grytviken and Bird Island. In addition, it examines the possibility of substituting fossil fuels in sea and land transport with alternatives adapted to local conditions. Expected results include an in-depth analysis of solar and wind resource potential, assessment of energy growth needs, and examination of the impact of these technologies on local biodiversity.
-
A roadmap will be drawn up for expanding solar and storage capacity to achieve net zero emissions, with concrete recommendations for the energy transition. The project will also provide solutions to ensure energy security and, ultimately, energy independence for SGSSI, a strategic objective given their geographical remoteness.
This initiative will contribute to the SGSSI government's vision of decarbonizing its energy supply by 2030 and laying the foundations for a long-term energy transformation strategy, thereby strengthening the island's resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
