Sainte-Hélène: Structuring the energy transition through a modernized technical framework
-
Context
St. Helena's power grid is isolated and historically dependent on imported diesel. The transition to a more sustainable energy mix, incorporating a growing share of renewable energies, represents a major strategic challenge for the territory. However, the small size of the network imposes significant technical constraints in terms of stability, management of production variations and security of supply.
-
Stakes and objectives
Facilitate the gradual integration of renewable energies and storage systems while guaranteeing the quality, safety and reliability of the power grid. The aim is also to strengthen the technical governance of the energy sector and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Stakeholders
Government of St Helena, electricity grid operator, regulator, energy sector players.
Facility description
The Facility enables the development of a modernized technical framework defining the rules for connecting renewable installations and storage systems to the electricity grid.
Requirements relating to power quality, grid stability, equipment protection and incident management are specified to ensure secure operation in a context of increasing penetration of renewable energies.
This framework helps to structure a controlled energy transition, strengthen the resilience of the power system and support the territory's climate ambitions.
Expected deliverables
- Consolidated technical framework for the power grid
- Detailed rules for connecting renewable installations
- Grid performance, quality and safety requirements
- Recommendations for regulatory and institutional implementation
