• Context

In August 2023, New Caledonia announced its commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2035. Road transport accounts for 12% of the territory's total emissions (2021) and is a key sector for decarbonization, despite heavy reliance on the private car. The vehicles used are mostly imported from Europe, Asia and the United States, with no existing method for comparing their fuel consumption and emissions.

  • Stakes & objectives

The facility aims to introduce an energy performance label for light vehicles. The aim is to better inform consumers and facilitate the implementation of incentive-based public policies favoring energy transition in the transport sector.

    Facility description

The facility involves developing a standardized energy label indicating the fuel consumption and atmospheric pollutant emissions of light vehicles. It is based on the analysis of international standards in order to classify them in a local reference system, converted into a single rating adapted to the New Caledonian context. This approach aims to encourage more responsible choices among consumers.
