Water management plan for Washington Slagbaai National Park
-
Context
The Washington Slagbaai National Park covers around 20% of Bonaire and is a sanctuary for many protected species. The presence of certain animals threatens the native flora, reducing the soil's capacity to retain rainwater. This water then runs off directly into brackish lakes and the ocean. The lack of precise mapping of water flows in the park is a major hindrance to the implementation of sustainable management of water and coastal resources.
-
Stakes and objectives
The facility aims to develop a water management plan to identify the best locations and interventions for freshwater retention and storage. It also aims to adapt the drainage network, reduce soil erosion, limit sediment transport to coastal areas and improve the park's resilience to climate change.

Facility description
The facility is part of Stichting Nationale Parken Bonaire (STINAPA)'s efforts to restore native flora and improve park management. Three initiatives are underway: restoration of the flora through the elimination of certain animal species, freshwater retention and modernization of the road network. The project involves drawing up a water management plan to map water flows and identify optimal areas for water storage. This plan will also enable the drainage network to be adapted to the new road infrastructures.
