Nu’u Moana Project: Field Feedback and Testimonial Collection
-
As part of the field campaign for the Nu’u Moana project, teams from the CREOCEAN consortium, in collaboration with the DCA, the BRGM, and Expertise France, conducted investigations at the seven sites selected for this study: the atolls of Anaa, Rangiroa, Fakarava, Makemo, Manihi, and Hao (Tuamotu Archipelago), as well as the municipality of Mahina (Pointe Vénus, Tahiti).
-
This campaign brought together coastal experts and anthropologists. At each site, about 20 people were interviewed or participated in public meetings, including residents, elected officials, municipal staff, and teachers.
-
The discussions held made it possible to document:
• Local perceptions of coastal changes and associated risks (beach retreat, salinization, erosion, flooding),
• Memories of extreme events (the 1983 cyclones, recurring flooding),
• Local adaptation practices and knowledge: coastal vegetation (mikimiki, aito, tamanu), elevated housing, collective resource management,
• Residents’ expectations regarding information, consultation, and involvement in developing solutions. -
This study of residents’ perceptions of coastal change and their acceptance of recommendations complements the analyses of the coastal environment conducted in Phases 1 and 2 (current state of knowledge on shoreline evolution, 30-year projections based on various trajectories). These findings will inform the site-specific synthesis and cross-cutting analysis, with a view to developing planning and adaptation recommendations through 2055.
